Twenty years ago — 1999

Emergency officials and Fourth Ward residents vented frustrations and safety concerns over increased railroad traffic at a special meeting of city and railroad representatives. People worried that more trains could block crossings, endanger residents, ruin sleep and slow emergency response times. Norfolk Southern railroad crossings were the primary concern among area residents. Traffic could increase to 25 trains daily following the railroad’s acquisition of Conrail on June 1.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A letter of intent has been signed by the parent company of AL Tech Specialty Steel to sell AL Tech’s Dunkirk facility and three other steel plants to the Sammi Group of South Korea for an undisclosed amount. If the deal does go through, it does not appear that there would be any adverse impact on any of the steel plants involved. Sammi officials seem interested in the specialty steel industry and there is even a possibility of further investment. No changes in operations are planned at the Dunkirk plant.

Forty years ago — 1979

Mrs. J. Robert Schlia has been named “Lady Elk of the Year.” She received the award, a brushed polished gold medallion necklace from Mrs. Lawrence Haase Sr., who received a similar honor in 1978. Mrs. Schlia was chosen for the award by Mrs. Frank J. Mackowiak, whose husband is the current exalted ruler, for her “untiring assistance and guidance.” A native of Buffalo, Mrs. Schlia has been active with the Ladies of the Elks since 1963.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Dwight D. Eisenhower, the victorious allied commander of World War II who went on to become America’s president in peacetime, died March 28 at the age of 78. The famed general of the Army, who served two terms in the White House as the nation’s 34th president, succumbed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Death ended a long and valiant battle waged against illness dating back to his first heart attack in 1955 during his first term.
