Twenty years ago — 1999

Eason Hall in Westfield was packed with residents, boating enthusiasts and business owners concerned about the shallow water depth of Barcelona Harbor. The economic future of Barcelona Harbor depends on whether or not the town of Westfield can find the dollars to dredge the harbor and the shallow mooring field, according to members of the Barcelona Harbor Commission. The harbor has brought in about a half million dollars to the local economy in past years. However, dredging the harbor could cost several hundred thousand dollars, money the town just doesn’t have.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Cassadaga Valley Central School instrumental music instructor John Cross has received notification that six CVCS band students have been selected for inclusion in the 1989 edition of Who’s Who In Music. The students — Ed Cutler, Shannon Pantall, Joanna Shreve, Terra Okerlund, Mark Odell and Laurie Waterman — have been selected as being among the country’s most outstanding high school musicians.

Forty years ago — 1979

Elizabeth Darling, director of athletics at Fredonia State University College, has been presented with the 1979 New York State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Service Award. The award is presented by the New York State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which has a membership of 72 New York State colleges. Ms. Darling is a voting representative for Fredonia State and as a coach is a member of the volleyball and bowling sports committees.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Miss Patricia Ann Condon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Condon of Cherry Creek, was named the first runnerup in the statewide Maple Queen contest held recently in Lewis County. She had been crowned Maple Queen for Chautauqua County at the competition held March 15 at Pine Valley Central School. Two years ago, Miss Sheila Anderson of Kennedy won both the state and national Maple Queen contests.
