Twenty years ago — 1999

Two-time Oscar-nominated actress Mary McDonnell will be the commencement speaker at Fredonia State University College on May 15. The star of movies, plays and television is a 1974 theatre graduate of Fredonia State and the 1992 winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Fredonia Alumni Association. Ms. McDonnell received her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress in 1991 for her portrayal of Stands With A Fist in the movie, “Dances With Wolves.” Her prize-winning performance also earned a Golden Globe nomination and the 1991 Movie Award.

Thirty years ago — 1989

To learn safe driving as well as reduce liability and collision insurance premiums, state licensed drivers can voluntarily participate in a six-hour point reduction class. The class was previously open only to those ordered to attend by traffic courts. Known as the Accident Prevention Insurance Reduction Class or Defensive Driving Program, the class teaches the basics of safe driving and discusses various driver-related laws, such as Driving While Intoxicated and seatbelt rules≥

Forty years ago — 1979

A citizens group in the mid-county community of Sinclairville is waiting for news from state and federal officials to see if its plan for a senior citizen housing project can be fulfilled. The Sinclairville 76ers For Better Living Corp. has been working on a project for two and a half years to develop the old Sinclairville High and Elementary School at Park and Church streets into apartment housing for the elderly.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Nancy Kuziora, 17, a senior at Silver Creek Central School, is the Student of the Week. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Kuziora of Lake Road, Silver Creek. Nancy is a cheerleader, a member of the chorus, National Honor Society, and held the office of secretary and treasurer of her class in her sophomore and junior years respectively. She plans to enter the teacher education program at Fredonia State in the fall.
