Members of the Dunkirk High School Building Improvement Team are asking the board of education to review its policy that requires a residency rule for new teachers and administrators in the Dunkirk Public Schools. The residency policy was adopted by the board about two years ago with the goals of strengthening the bond between teachers/administrators and the community, and keeping more tax dollars within the community. The improvement team cited the loss of experienced, enthusiastic teachers who leave after a year or two because of the forced residency.

The community efforts to restore the Fredonia Opera House are progressing, as many volunteers from the Fredonia Preservation Society continue working to restore the theater, located inside the 98-year-old village hall, back to its original splendor. These restoration efforts recently received a shot in the arm as about 60 students from the national co-ed service Alpha Phi Omega fraternity assisted in the cause last weekend. Some of the students removed the opera house seats and loaded them on to a truck, where they were moved to a warehouse on Water Street for restoration.

Mr. Swanson noted that he has truly enjoyed his work, adding that he has always been a strong supporter of education, particularly the trades or vocational aspect.

Dan Wolfe of Dunkirk, who scored more points last fall than any high school football player in Western New York, has accepted a full scholarship for football to Villanova University. Villanova, of course, was not the only college interested in the Cardinal Mindszenty High School senior. Dan has earned 15 varsity letters at Mindszenty in four sports — football, basketball, track and baseball. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. Wolfe, 768 Eagle St., Dunkirk.
