Twenty years ago — 1999

The village of Brocton and the town of Portland already have a good working relationship when it comes to sharing services. What both might want to consider is consolidation or joining forces in a closer alliance in order to become more efficient and effective. A recent survey showed that most residents favor consolidation. This was the message presented to about 40 people who attended a session at the Brocton Central School auditorium to review analysis of aservice delivery options report.

Thirty years ago — 1989

After many years of intensive study of parish facilities, the parish council of St. Joseph’s Church in Fredonia announces the beginning of a fund drive to be conducted through the parish to help provide the resources for a new 1,125 square foot entrance and indoor gathering space adjacent to the sanctuary. This proposed addition will accommodate the preparation for funerals, weddings, baptisms as well as sociability of the parishioners that precedes and follows services.

Forty years ago — 1979

Three small children located a balloon which drifted down from Toronto into Ulrich’s Trailer Park on Route 60, Cassadaga. Mrs. James Olson of the trailer park said her two children, Christine, 4, and Michael, 2, along with Dennis Morton Jr., 3, also of the trailer park, found the downed balloon while playing outside. A card was attached which revealed the balloon was from the inner-city Angels balloon race in Toronto in celebration of the International Year of the Child.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Bids are being received by the Fredonia Central School District for the sale of the former Sheridan 7 schoolhouse. The two-room building is located at the corner of Route 20 and Newell Road in the town of Sheridan. The brick structure was last used for educational purposes during the 1963-64 school year.
