Retrospective

Twenty years ago — 1999

The OBSERVER will become a morning newspaper on Monday, June 28, according to Publisher James C. Austin. The OBSERVER is currently delivered in the morning on Saturday and Sunday. It has been an afternoon paper Monday through Friday. Mr. Austin noted, “The decision is the result of months of study and careful deliberation about how best we can serve our readers. As lifestyles continue to change, we must change with them to accommodate our readers.”

Thirty years ago — 1989

The rank of Eagle Scout was conferred on Christopher J. Quirk and Benjamin O. Koenig at the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield. Christopher is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Quirk of Westfield. His Eagle project was community service, including researching and cataloging, to the Patterson Library. Benjamin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Koening of Westfield, had as his Eagle project the cleanup and marking of the Portage Trail between Mayville and Westfield.

Forty years ago — 1979

Dunkirk High School’s Marauder 3R Plus One Club recently held its third major event of the school years when four DHS graduates returned to their alma mater to participate in a panel discussion. Among the participants were Mary Hutchinson, the 1971 salutatorian and currently a media buyer for Mendelson Inc. in Buffalo; 1972 valedictorian Deborah Anders Silverman, director of communications at Fredonia State; Cynthia Parlato, 1972 salutatorian and third-year medical student at UB; and Sheryl Graf, president of the 1974 graduating class and currently the manager of Fredonia’s Burger King.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Calendar Girl for the Month of May is brown-eyed Janice Leone, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony F. Leone of Lake Road, Fredonia. A member of the senior class at Brocton Central School where she is a math and science major, Janice plans to attend college in the fall. She has served as treasurer of her freshman class and secretary of the sophomore class. A journalism typist, she is a member of the yearbook staff and the junior literary staff.
