Twenty years ago — 1999

Swimming classes have entered a new world at Silver Creek Central School. An unusual silence settled over the district pool as students submerged and swam with air tanks, regulators, swim fins and goggles. The district physical education department has been teaching a snorkeling course for high school students in partnership with Point Breeze Dive Shop of Angola. Students learn the basics of safety and procedure in addition to basic scuba training near the end of the program.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Featured in People in Profile is lifetime Dunkirk resident Raymond Abramowicz, who is best known for his association with the Moose organization. In 1979, he served as president of District II — New York State Moose. Known as “Lefty,” he is currently serving a three-year term as trustee of the Dunkirk lodge. But Mr. Abramowicz is most proud of his work with the Moose Clowns, a group he helped form with fellow Moose member Fred Bartin. In 1984, Mr. Abramowicz received the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Moose member, the coveted Pilgrim Degree, given for service to the Moose organization and to the community.

Forty years ago — 1979

Nancy Kerr, a graduating senior at Pine Valley High School, is the BOCES selection for Student of the Week. She is a second-year student at the LoGuidice Center in Fredonia and will graduate with certification in auto body repair in June. The daughter of Charles and Shirley Kerr of Route 83, Cherry Creek, Nancy ranks in the top 10 percent of her class. She also has been employed in a CETA position with the Pine Valley High guidance office for the past school year.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Miss Lynn Saxton has been named valedictorian and Miss Patricia Marsh, salutatorian, of the Class of 1969 at Cassadaga Valley Central School. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Saxton Jr., 3209 Hooker Road, Sinclairville, Lynn achieved a high school average of 92.4. She will attend Buffalo State as a special education major. Patricia is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Marsh of Railroad Avenue, Stockton. She maintained an average of 92.1 and will attend Fredonia State as an education major.
