Twenty years ago — 1999

The New York State Department of Labor recently awarded a Certificate of Apprenticeship Completion to Hugh W. Graves and Michael Munson of Dunkirk. The certificate acknowledges their successful completion of an apprenticeship at the occupation of machinist. The program, sponsored by Lakeside Precision Inc., the only machinist program in Chautauqua County at the present time, combined 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with 576 hours of related theoretical instruction. The certificate is recognized by the machinist industry nationwide as attesting to the attainment of the highest professional standards.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Guy Williams, the actor who played Zorro in the popular 1950s television series of the same name, died earlier this month. He apparently suffered a heart attack and died in his apartment, according to police. Mr. Williams was 65. His real name was Armando Catalano and he was born in New York. “Zorro” recounted the adventures of Diego de la Vega. Mr. Williams also starred as Professor John Robinson in the 1960s show, “Lost in Space,” portraying the leader of a family marooned in space.

Forty years ago — 1979

Silver Creek Central School is the regional prize winner with the highest team score outside Pennsylvania in this year’s Edinboro (Pa.) State College Mathematics Contest. Barbara Prinzi placed second among sophomores in the contest and 17th among all competitors. Peter Stebbins, came in fourth among sophomores and 30th among all competitors while Kathy Cross placed eighth among sophomores and 45th among all competitors.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Forestville Central School has named Elaine Ball valedictorian and Joanna Charewicz salutatorian of the Class of 1969. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ball of Ball Road, Cassadaga, Elaine attained an average of 92.35. She plans to attend the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Pharmacy. Joanna, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Charewicz of Route 39, Forestville, has a final average of 92.25. She will attend the State University of New York at Buffalo as a pre-med major.
