Twenty years ago — 1999

Sophie Hodorowicz Knab, the author of three books on Polish traditions, is scheduled to speak at St. Hedwig Social Center on topics from her three books as well as sharing memories of growing up in Dunkirk. Sophie immigrated with her family to the United States at the age of six. St. Hedwig’s is her former parish and she is well-acquainted with many of its parishioners. Special guest Arthur Parks, vice president of the Polish Arts Club of Buffalo, will introduce the speaker.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Michael Alexander Williamson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don T. Curtis, 90 West Fifth St., Dunkirk was recently named winner of the annual Bausch & Lomb Science Award which will be presented at the Underclass Awards Ceremony at Dunkirk High School in June. The science award — a handsome bronze medal — is presented each year to winners at more than 8,000 participating schools throughout the United States and Canada. Michael is planning a career in engineering.

Forty years ago — 1979

Cardinal Mindszenty High School valedictorian for the Class of 1979, the school’s final graduating class, is David Klocek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Klocek of North Ocelot Street, Dunkirk. Salutatorian is Roy J. Boorady, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Boorady of Eagle Street, Dunkirk. Diana Gernatt will give the valedictory address for the accelerated juniors, with Patricia Keller as salutatorian.

Fifty years ago — 1969

OBSERVER Student of the Week is Tanner Luce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Luce of East Main Road, Sheridan. He is president of the junior class at Fredonia High School as well as president-elect of the Student Council. Tanner is a three-year participant on the school’s football and tennis teams. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
