Twenty years ago — 1999

A proposal to build a restaurant at Cedar Beach in Dunkirk has been made to city officials. Marshall T. Hall, a Brocton resident who owns and operates Marshall’s Famous Hotdogs in Fredonia stated that he and a group of associates are in building a restaurant/beach club at Cedar Beach. The beach is located in the 2nd Ward off Point Drive North. Private funds would be used for the project, but a lease agreement with the city would be necessary for the land.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Even if the tolls are removed from the New York State Thruway as scheduled in 1996, a trip on the 559-mile superhighway will be no free gift, according to a top Thruway official. New York will be shouldered with hundreds of millions of dollars in new costs that won’t exist if the tolls remain. Those include the cost of removing toll plazas, widening lanes for increased traffic, building new exits and performing general maintenance. And so far, state officials don’t know where that money would come from.

Forty years ago — 1979

Silver Creek Central School valedictorian is Patricia Abram, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Abram, Center Road, Sheridan. She maintained an average of 93.17 and will continue her education at Mesa Community College. Salutorian is David Pratt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Pratt. An ROTC winner, David plans to study electrical engineering at Duke University.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Calendar Girl for the month of June is Jean Mathews, a member of the graduating class at Westfield Academy and Central School. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mathews, 7 Ash St., Westfield, Jean is a varsity cheerleader as well as a member of the school band and chorus. Secretary of the Student Council, she will attend Graham Junior College in Boston.
