Twenty years ago — 1999

Loretta Torain of Dunkirk was the first recipient of the Mamie and Ira Jordan Scholastic Achievement Award given at Fredonia State University College annually to African American students who have excelled academically. Ms. Torain is in her second year at Fredonia as a major in both history and English. School of Music Professor Robert Jordan founded the award and named it in memory of his parents. It is the first specifically established for African American students at Fredonia State.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Gowanda trash separation is getting good cooperation from residents, according to reports from the Maple City Disposal Service. As a result of the recycling program, there has been a significant reduction in the amount of garbage which has to be hauled to the landfill. A recent report from Cattaraugus County noted that every ton of recycled materials will save taxpayers $50 in disposal fees.

Forty years ago — 1979

President Carter dealt a crushing blow to the Dunkirk-Fredonia economy with his decision to phase out quotas on imported specialty steel over the next eight months. AL Tech Specialty Steel, which was formed just three years ago and is the area’s largest employer with some 1,150 workers had been counting on a three-year extension of the quotas to firm up its footing in the specialty steel market. The president’s move to completely wipe out the quotas by February is expected to adversely affect the employment picture at AL Tech and 20 other specialty steel companies.

Fifty years ago — 1969

More than 1,000 participants are expected to be present this weekend when the Grape Belt Citizens Band Radio Club Inc. will hold its jamboree and campout at Stra-Mor Acres in Cassadaga. Guests for the affair are expected from all over the United States and from as far away as Nova Scotia in Canada. Richard Burgstrom of Fredonia is the club’s president.
