Twenty years ago — 1999

Winners in the fourth annual Juneteenth festival bakeoff were Mary Lee Williams, first place for her pound cake; Loretta Slaton Torain, second place for pound cake; Mary Lee Williams, first place for sweet potato pie; Rosietta Thomas, second place for sweet potato pie; Doris Mack, third place for sweet potato pie; and Janice D. Slaton, overall first place for her peach cobbler.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A plaque honoring Cassadaga Valley Central School alumni killed in action during World War II and in Vietnam was presented to the school by the Sinclairville and Cassadaga American Legion posts. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the school’s 50th anniversary of the district’s consolidation. Students in CVCS’s Early Childhood Program made a quilt especially for the 50-year celebration.

Forty years ago — 1979

The Dunkirk Town Board recently gave its unanimous support for the construction of a road through the north end of the D & F Plaza to connect Central Avenue and Bennett Road. The proposed project, known as the “university access road” would follow Vineyard Drive in the township. It would then turn north along the edge of Plaza property and the Thruway embankment. The construction request, which was first proposed four years ago, came from the state Department of Transportation.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Firestone Tire Co. officials have announced that their construction of a new retreading plant on Bennett Road in Dunkirk is close to completion and the building will be ready for full operation by July 15. The Dunkirk plant will employ 16 to 20 persons at the start. It is located on a 13-acre tract of land. The company plans an open house in July.
