Twenty years ago — 1999

The Dunkirk Police Department is gearing up for its biggest community policing event of the year and Sgt. David Ortolano is pleased with what he sees. Almost 30 people turned out at the city pier for an organizational meeting for National Night Out, which takes place Aug. 3. The event continues to grow each year, with more than 700 people taking part last year throughout the city’s four wards. Sgt. Ortolano is in charge of the Dunkirk Police Department’s community programs.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The Fredonia Preservation Society has announced the establishment of an Endow-A-Chair program for the Fredonia Opera House restoration. Area residents who wish to make a family gift, celebrate an occasion or designate a memorial can endow a chair at the gold, silver or bronze level. The plaque on the seat back will be a permanent reminder for future generations of the part community members played in the restoration.

Forty years ago — 1979

His Royal Majesty Prince Abdul Rahman has officially purchased property at Castile Heights in Fredonia owned and developed by general contractor Samuel P. Castiglia. The prince is a close friend of Mr. Castiglia’s daughter, Polly Castile of New York City. He was presented with the key to the village by Mayor Louis Mancuso during a recent visit.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Robert Studley, 27, of Gowanda is the winner of the Demolition Derby at this year’s Chautauqua County Fair. He walked off with a trophy, $250 in prize money and a chance at the state competition in Little Valley. This is the first big win for Mr. Studley, who commented that the competition at the fair was the roughest he had seen in a long time, but he knew it would be even tougher at the state level.
