Twenty years ago — 1999

At the annual Southwestern Firemen’s Convention hosted by Doyle Hose 1 in Cheektowaga, the East Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Co. received three trophies for various competitions. First place was received in the grotesque parade float division and the grotesque parade singles division. The final trophy received was for third place in the fire prevention brochure contest. The theme for the convention was “The Great Escape.”

Thirty years ago — 1989

Several area youths displayed their skateboarding skills using small ramps during an exhibition which was part of the recent three-day Downtown Dunkirk Festival. The winner of the five-day trip to Las Vegas was Deb Woloszyn of Doughty Street in Dunkirk. The trip, along with the entire festival, was sponsored by the Merchants and Business Association.

Forty years ago — 1979

David Meyer and Lori Rozen were recently crowned Dunkirk Playground King and Queen for 1979 during ceremonies at Washington Park. Lori is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rozen of South Ocelot Street, Dunkirk. David is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Meyer of Dunkirk. Both contestants represented School 7.

Fifty years ago — 1969

The list of winners in the Home Crafts competition conducted by the New York State Fair included the name Marvin A. Bjurlin, 17 Central Ave., Fredonia. A ceramics instructor at Fredonia State University College, Mr. Bjurlin took first prize in the wheel thrown ceramics division.
