Twenty years ago – 1999

Madylon Kubera is the apparent winner in the open Republican mayoral write-in primary in the city of Dunkirk with results that emphasize the every vote counts. Ms. Kubera received 36 votes to edge Thomas Kubera, who received 35 votes. Henry Serafin, the third candidate who expressed interest in the mayoral post, received seven votes. Ms. Kubera is a former mayor of the city of Dunkirk.

Thirty years ago — 1989

It appears that the first campus in SUNY to have no students owing it any money for a semester is Fredonia State University College. University accountants made that report after clearing all the accounts owed by 5,011 students totaling $7.5 million in tuition, room and board for the fall 1988 semester. A 100 percent collection rate for an academic term has never occurred in SUNY before. Fredonia is the first and only university so far to accomplish this.

Forty years ago – 1979

At least a three-way mayoral race is shaping up in Dunkirk following the submission of independent nominating petitions by Clem Lutz, who served as mayor in 1972-73. Mr. Lutz says he is running for mayor under the “Open Book Party.” He has submitted petitions bearing 429 signatures.

Fifty years ago — 1969

More than 400 scuba divers have been invited to Dunkirk this weekend to participate in Dunkirk’s second annual Trash Derby. On Sunday, Sept. 28, skin and scuba divers from Canada, Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio will rally in Dunkirk to search the harbor bottom for trash, litter and assorted items of junk. This unique underwater cleanup is an attempt by local divers to make a positive contribution to reducing pollution in Lake Erie.
