Twenty years ago – 1999

Postal carriers were recently honored for their years as members of the National Association of Letter Carriers. They are: Harry Falco, 45 years; John Michalak, 35 years; William Trudnowski, 35 years; Eddie Aniszewski, 45 years; Gerry Haase, 40 years; Eugene Pincoski, 40 years; Felix Welka, 50 years; Robert Peterson, 50 years; and Richard Seybold, 30 years.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Dunkirk Mayor Madylon Kubera said she is “very concerned” that recent comments made by state and county officials about the proposed Dunkirk Containerboard plant could jeopardize the proposal. At the request of those planning to develop the plant, she explained, everyone involved in attempting to put the deal together had agreed to make no public statements about the proposal until all the various parts of the proposal were in place.

Forty years ago – 1979

Michele Allison Holcomb, 3 1/2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Holcomb, 244 Lincoln Ave., Dunkirk has been selected as a finalist in the Baby Miss America Pageant in the 3-5 year age group. She became eligible through a picture beauty contest. Michele will carry the banner of Baby Great Lakes Printing when she participates at the frilly dress, bathing suit and sport outfit competition in New York City.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Several incidents of arson, vandalism and burglary occurred in Dunkirk Halloween night. Included in this mischief was the taking of more than $4,000 worth of merchandise (rifles, shotguns and ammunition) from Joe’s Sporting Goods. Red paint was sprayed on doors at the Dunkirk Junior High School. False alarms, numerous leaf fires and a slew of smashed pumpkins were among the other incidents reported.
