The Dunkirk Housing Authority has approved a contract to purchase a 13.7-acre site at 1076 Central Ave., near the former Cardinal Mindszenty Field, from the estate of Mary Lagana to develop an assisted living facility and single-family building lots. The property would provide enough space for 24 units, off-street parking and a circular driveway with a covered entrance. The DHA has an obligation to meet all of the housing needs in the city of Dunkirk.

Another chapter in Dunkirk’s long and glorious fishing story has been written. The Gloff family has ended its fishing business after three generations and 36 years and has sold its well-known fishing rig – the G-4, which already has left for its new home port in Conneaut, Ohio. Herbert Gloff Sr. was captain of the tug from 1943 until 1969. His son Charles Gloff Sr. captained the tug until his death in May 1978 following a sudden illness. Charles Gloff’s sons, Charles Jr. and James, operated the tug in 1978, but the family made a decision to sell the tug this year.

Efforts are now under way for the preservation of an historic community landmark in Dunkirk. The 19th century residence, located at 429 Central Ave. and known to Dunkirkers as the Abell House, is under consideration by the National Registry of Historic Buildings. Nelson Palmer, a Dunkirk architect, is leading the campaign. The house was built in the 1850s by Langley Fullagar, cashier of the Lake Shore Banking Co.
