Thirty years ago — 1989

More than 10 suspicious fires have occurred in the East Town of Dunkirk and Fourth Ward area during the past several weeks, including one which started in the base of a storage garage at the Gregory Szukala residence, 10962 South Roberts Road. A passing motorist alerted neighbors to the fire by sounding his car horn. The fire was quickly extinguished and damage to the garage was minimal.

Forty years ago — 1979

The Dunkirk Board of Education named Terry L. Wolfenden, a Dunkirk High School social studies teacher, to replace Dr. Myles Bigenwald as the Middle School principal. Miss Wolfenden was one of 28 candidates for the job. She assumes her position at annual salary of $22,500.

Fifty years ago — 1969

William F. Szymanski, 147 Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk made the big news at the Columbus Club as he bowled a 710 series on games of 220-256-234.
