Thirty years ago — 1989

It took five years, but one of the balloons launched at the Sheridan Playground site in July 1984 was finally found in Pembroke, N.Y. Alison Wagner, daughter of Nancy Wagner who was the playground director at the time, received a letter recently from Norbert Geyer, who said he was bow hunting in Pembroke on Nov. 5 when he found the address tag and mailed it with a note.

Forty years ago — 1979

Dunkirk bowler Rick Czerwinski cracked the 700 barrier for the first time when he rolled a 730 (248-263-219) series at the Lucky Lanes. The big effort came on lanes 23 and 24 for Jarvis Firestone in the Fraternal Classic League. A 198-average bowler, Rick performs in three leagues. His previous 10-year career high was a 689 series. He also has a 279-game to his credit.

Fifty years ago — 1969

F. Neil Chaffie, newly elected mayor of Dunkirk, was guest speaker at the forum sponsored by the Dunkirk High School Honor Society.
