Thirty years ago — 1989

Villenova Grange 604 celebrated its 100th anniversary at the Grange Hall at Balcom Corners. The event began with a welcome from present master Jared Woolley. Villenova Grange was organized on Dec. 5, 1889 by Silas Kent, Van Alstine and Elizabeth Lord. There were 45 charter members, with the Scott, Ruttenbur and Woolley families still active.

Forty years ago — 1979

Calendar Girl for the month of December is Erica Heidi Kelley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kelley and a senior at Dunkirk High School. Ranking fourth in her class, she is a 3-1-3 student at SUNY Fredonia. Erica has participated in basketball and track, for which she was voted MVP. She plans to attend SUNY Fredonia next year and after that a college where she can pursue a career in medicine.

Fifty years ago — 1969

The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Leo Hammerl was the guest speaker at a recent meeting of the St. Mary’s Home-School Association at St. Mary’s School auditorium in Dunkirk.
