Thirty years ago — 1989

Dunkirk Mayor-elect Greg Krauza has chosen Ronald A. Szot of 429 Lord St. as the new city clerk and deputy city attorney, effective Jan. 1, 1990. The 1976 salutatorian of Cardinal Mindszenty High School, Szot is a graduate of Notre Dame University and the University of Syracuse Law School. He has been on the board of directors of the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation since its incorporation in 1988.

Forty years ago — 1979

The annual Christmas party for the employees of the Dunkirk Printing Co. was held at the Top of the Mark. Honored were two OBSERVER employees: John A. Nowak, composing room foreman, who will retire officially on Feb. 2, 1980 after nearly 50 years of service; and LaMar Schnur, photographer and recipient of the “Outstanding OBSERVER Employee Award.”

Fifty years ago — 1969

Two poems by Mrs. Christine B. Oppenheimer, 10 Lowell Place, Fredonia have been selected as winners by the Creative Arts Foundation of Sharon, Conn., in its sixth annual poetry competition.
