Thirty years ago — 1990

After a quarter century of service to the town of Stockton, Cathryn Berndt has decided to hang up her official historian’s hat. Her resignation was effective Dec. 31. Mrs. Berndt, who will observe her 85th birthday in April, has authored a book about the Stockton township entitled, “Stockton — Seen Through the Rear View Mirror.” Published in 1988, the book traces the local community from its founding up to 1985.

Forty years ago — 1980

The Brooklyn based Fashion Foundation of America has placed Pope John Paul II at the top of its 40-member “best dressed” list for 1979. On Pope John Paul, foundation director Charles Richmond said, he is “impeccable in his appearances, always striking.” And noting that he dresses far better than previous pontiffs, Richmond added, “There is fabric there, and design and fit.”

Fifty years ago — 1970

Walter Sliwinski of Leopard Street and Arthur Smoczynski of East Lake Road, Dunkirk have been appointed as Dunkirk city patrolmen at a starting salary of $6,800.
