Thirty years ago — 1990
Among the winners in the Pre-Teen Glamour Pageant in Erie were Jennifer and Leslie Washburn, daughters of Jon and Sharon Washburn, 632 Swan St., Dunkirk. Jennifer, a 7th-grader at the Dunkirk Middle School, won the talent portion of the pageant with a tap dance to “Anything Goes,” while Leslie, a 4th-grader, won the Best in Dressy Wear award wearing a purple taffeta party dress.
Forty years ago – 1980
Chautauqua County’s “permanent” giant landfill in the Town of Ellery is finally expected to be opened this summer, according to County Public Works Director William Parment. The Ellery landfill was expected to be opened last year. However, two major storms late last summer interrupted the work schedule and postponed the opening until this summer. Last year, the county hauled an average of more than 10 loads of garbage per day between the Pomfret transfer station on Webster Road and the Chautauqua landfill.
Fifty years ago — 1970
The name of Joy Park for Fredonia’s new downtown park between Hamlet and Howard streets was recommended to the village board of trustees at its last meeting.
