Thirty years ago — 1990

Vandals damaged the gazebo at Gowanda’s Creekside Park, an area which is due to be officially opened to the public this spring. The bandstand-sized gazebo was purchased in kit form by the Gowanda Kiwanis Club and erected last fall by inmates from the Gowanda Correctional Facility. A number of railing spindles were broken and torn out. A waste receptacle was torn off its base and left lying on the ground.

Forty years ago — 1980

Mayor Gary Michalak has directed the Dunkirk Fire Department to follow a 1979 council resolution that designates Cobb Ambulance to transport emergency cases to the hospital. The mayor’s verbal directive was made after John Cobb claimed the city fire department’s free service was putting his private company on the brink of bankruptcy.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Dunkirk Building Inspector Charles Poland has granted permission for the construction of a four-unit apartment at 47 Seel St.

Molly Madigan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Madigan of Temple Road, Dunkirk and a student at Cardinal Mindszenty High School, has been chosen Calendar Girl for the month of February.
