Thirty years ago — 1990

Mark Schindler has purchased the Tschopp Funeral Home on Center Street in Gowanda with plans to continue the business under the new name of the Schindler Funeral Home. He is a licensed funeral director with 10 years of experience. Before buying the Center Street establishment, he was employed by Mentley Funeral Homes in Gowanda, Cattaraugus and Little Valley.

Forty years ago — 1980

JoAnne Fischer, a Fredonia resident since 1978, is featured in the January issue of “Ms.” magazine as one of 80 U.S. women “to watch in the 1980s.” She was selected because of her activism in the area of women’s health and is organizer/chair person of the National Women’s Health Network. Prior to moving to Chautauqua County, Ms. Fischer directed the women’s health advocacy program of the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Fifty years ago — 1970

A new electronic accounting computer has been installed in the city treasurer’s office and is now being used to figure city payrolls, water bills and accounting of the individual departments.
