Twenty years ago — 1990

Seniors Brenda Marsh and Paul Mierzwa were the top award winners at the Fredonia High School Spring Athletic Awards Night. Marsh and Mierzwa were named top senior athletes in receiving the David “Mick” Dunning and Roger K. Moore awards, respectively. Marsh was also awarded MVP in softball. Mierzwa received WDOE awards for baseball, basketball and football and was named tri-most valuable player of the baseball team.

Forty years ago — 1980

Patti LuPone, star of “Evita” and a Tony Award nominee for “Outstanding Actress in a Musical,” has ties in the Dunkirk area. Her father, Dr. O.J. “Chick” Lupone of Mesa, Calif., is the son of the late Pasquale and Felicia LuPone who resided at 93 E. Seventh St., Dunkirk. She has two aunts and an uncle living in the city: Mrs. Yolanda LuPone Leone of Seel Street, Mrs. Josephine Subjack of Grant Avenue and John LuPone of the East Seventh Street address. Her father, Dr. LuPone, is a graduate of Dunkirk High School.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Miss Bethany Lynne Carlson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Carlson of 271 Lincoln Ave., Dunkirk, will represent her country as a summer foreign exchange student to Lima, Peru, in a program sponsored by the Foundation for International Cooperation of the Diocese of Buffalo.
