Thirty years ago — 1990

Dunkirk Police Chief Andrew Balzer announced that he has hired the city’s first woman police officer. Stephanie Stanton will begin work on June 24. In August, she will attend the Sheriff’s Department police academy. Officer Stanton is 24 years old and lives in Dunkirk. She is presently employed as a security officer with Cassadaga Job Corps. She will begin her new position at a starting salary of $24,892 a year.

Forty years ago — 1980

A memorial flag that flew over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., has been presented to St. Joseph’s School for Exceptional Children by Congressman Stanley Lundine. The flag was given in memory of the late Bruce Nye, an Eagle Scout and graduate of the school on Bennett Road in Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1970

A meeting is being planned in Dunkirk to organize a group of young people, ages 13 to 25, to form a YOUTH-NARC — Youth Organized and United to Help the National Association for Retarded Children.
