Thirty years ago — 1990

Winners of the Lakeshore Humane Society Pet Photo contest are Susan Soper, first place winner of a $100 U.S. Savings Bond for her photo of a beagle named Biscuit; Bonnie Gajewski, second place winner of a $25 Hills’ Gift Certificate for her photo of Bearly, a calf. Photos were displayed at Hills and the donations raised from the public voting on them went to the Humane Society.

Forty years ago — 1980

Construction is scheduled to begin this week for a new building for the “In A Nutshell” arts and crafts shop in Dunkirk. It will be built on Wright Street at King Street in the city’s urban-renewal district. The arts and crafts business, operated by Janet Davis and Darleen Kawski of Dunkirk, is now located at 19 Wright St. The new building, with a completion date of September, will have three levels and 3,200 square feet of space.

Fifty years ago — 1970

The Rev. P. Burdette Howe is the newlyassigned pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Dunkirk. He and his family moved into the parsonage at 15 East Sixth St. on July 1.
