Thirty years ago — 1990

On his 60th birthday this month, Sam Conti Sr. had his children and grandchildren watching him play softball for the J & L Oilers. A pitcher and former third baseman, Conti has played softball and baseball for 45 years and competed in sports for 50 years. He has played against men from his generation, their children, and now is competing against their grandchildren.

Forty years ago — 1980

Broadway star Patti LuPone, who has many relatives in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area and whose father was a native of Dunkirk, was paid a backstage visit by movie actress Lana Turner following LuPone’s performance in the musical “Evita.” Patti plans to leave the show on Sept. 27 when her contract expires because she was not offered any kind of a raise even after winning the coveted Tony Award.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Welch Foods Inc. in Westfield will increase the size of its employee and visitor parking lot by 50 percent this month.
