The 1990 federal census will show Chautauqua County not only has fewer residents than it did a decade ago, but those people are marginally poorer than they were in 1980. One prediction is that when the April 1, 1990 nose count is finally released, it will show the county down about 5,000 people from the 147,000 counted in 1980. Per capita income is down and the average annual wage in the county is $13,569 or just 70.4 percent of the state average of $19,261.

The Babcock Street School will be auctioned off to the highest bidder during a public auction on Aug. 7. Sources close to the school board indicate the board would not consider selling the school to a private investor for the $20,000 price quoted the village and town, but would expect instead a higher price for the building.
