Thirty years ago — 1990

The man at least two Chautauqua County executives have called “the devil’s advocate” is cleaning out his desk in the Gerace Office Building in Mayville after 30 years of service. John R. Luensman began as county planner on Aug. 19, 1960 and has seen and participated in literally dozens ofmajor changes and developments here. His official retirement date is Aug. 19.

Forty years ago — 1980

Henry Jarvis of Denver, Colo., who left Dunkirk about 20 years ago, is back visiting the Ubaney family, 153 Liberty St., Fredonia. His many friends remember Mr. Jarvis as one of the top flyweight/bantamweight boxers. “He met the best of them,” said one of his friends.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Plans have been finalized for the annual barbecue and field day to benefit Holy Cross Apostolic Center on West Lake Road in Dunkirk. The event will be held Aug. 16 on the center’s grounds and will feature entertainment by the White Eagle Band and ” The Barbershop Quartet.”
