Thirty years ago — 1990

Mara Goodman of Dunkirk attended the July 14-21 Highlights Foundation Writers Workshop at the Chautauqua Institution. She joined 100 other writers for children and a faculty of 36 writers, editors and publishers from 26 states. The workshop on writing was conducted by Highlights for Children, the national periodical for children from age 2 through 12.

Forty years ago — 1980

Through the efforts of numerous citizens and community groups, the town of Hanover recently opened the township’s second park on King Road in Smith’s Mill. The land for the 8-acre recreation facility was donated to the town by Harry VanCuren of Silver Creek and through the work of Hanover Councilman Larry Youngberg and town employees Harry Suski and Les Manning, the site was developed for a park for picnicking and games.

Fifty years ago — 1970

The Dunkirk Kiwanis won the Dunkirk Little League championship title with a convincing 19-4 victory over the Lions Club. Leading the hitting attack for the Kiwanis team was Gary Zaffalon, who drove in a total of six runs with a single and a grand-slam home run. Paul Raynor was the winning pitcher.
