Thirty years ago — 1990

A local fraternal organization announced it will donate a new football scoreboard to the Dunkirk Public Schools. The 12-foot scoreboard is being donated by Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 89 in Dunkirk and will be installed prior to the first football game of the season. The Moose Club also recently donated a scoreboard to the Fredonia Central Schools.

Forty years ago — 1980

Construction and consumption of a 500-pound ice cream sundae highlights today’s youth activities which are part of the 10-day celebration to mark Dunkirk’s centennial. The construction of the sundae will take place at Memorial Park, with Aldrich Dairy of Fredonia donating the ice cream and Nog Inc., the chocolate topping.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Disneyland officials banned all longhaired youths from the Magic Kingdom in Anaheim, Calif., following a confrontation between 300 young hippies and police that culminated in the park closing six hours early. Eighteen “yippies” were arrested at the park.
