Thirty years ago — 1990

One of the 1945 Gowanda High School graduates who will be attending his class reunion arrived at the Dunkirk Airport in his home-built Glasair craft that he flew from Redlands, Calif. Arthur “Archie” Luine built the two-seater plane himself from a kit that took him four years to complete.

Forty years ago — 1980

In recognition of Dunkirk’s CentennialCelebration, Geo. Ray Tire Center on Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk has been chosen as the first Goodyear tire dealer in the United States to fly a replica of one of the Goodyear blimps. The inflatable blimp, which has been flying high over the tire center for the past week, is 20 feet long and six feet in diameter. It needs 350 cubic feet of helium to inflate.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Mrs. Lucy Warner Putnam, a longtime Fredonia school teacher, died recently at the age of 103. Mrs. Putnam first taught school under a special certificate at the age of 16.
