Thirty years ago — 1990

The Battle of the Bands in Dunkirk turned into a battle in the street when several fights broke out as the winners of the competition were announced. It was not immediately clear who was fighting and who was attempting to break up the fight but when the dust had settled, police had four persons in custody.

Forty years ago — 1980

A ceremony was held earlier this month to change the name of Lake City Hose Co. No. 3 in Dunkirk to the Daniel F. Anson Hose Co. No. 3. Firefighter Anson, a member of Lake City Hose Co. No. 3, was killed Aug. 8, 1979, during a severe wind and rainstorm that hit the city the night of Aug. 7. His badge, number 25, also will be retired by the fire department during the ceremony.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Joseph, William and John Schober, sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Schober of Dunkirk, sailed recently from New York Harbor aboard the luxury flagship T.S. Bremen. Accompanied by their aunts, the Misses Frances and Teresa Schober, the boys will tour Germany and visit relatives in Traunstein.
