Thirty years ago — 1990

Trophies were awarded to first-place winners in the recent Bike-A-Thon sponsored by the Sheridan Youth Recreation Commission and benefitting St. Jude’s Hospital. David Makuch was the winner in the 10 and older age group while Raymond Pfleuger took the honors in the 6 through 9 years category. Don Reinhoudt of Brocton, director of the Chautauqua County Youth Bureau, said monies collected totaled $377.91.

Forty years ago — 1980

Vincent Martonis of Silver Creek, a collector of Chautauqua County Collectibles for the past 10 years, is the owner of a letter dated Dec. 9, 1818 and written to James Thorn, an Albany attorney. In his letter, the writer expressed hope for the prosperity and development of Dunkirk. Mr. Martonis also collects bottles, a collection that began with an original Dr. M. M. Fenner (Fredonia) bottle.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Plans are being made to consolidate St. Anthony’s and St. Joseph’s schools in Fredonia. The merger will begin this year with full implementation coming next year.
