Thirty years ago — 1990

A large crowd of area residents turned out for the arrival of a steam locomotive that stopped in Dunkirk to pick up passengers for a round trip excursion to Albion, Pa. Although the train was several hours late, about 100 passengers boarded in Dunkirk for the ride. It has been more than 30 years since a scheduled steam train stopped in the city for passengers.

Forty years ago — 1980

Soft sculpture dolls, all handmade with embroidered faces, are fast becoming favorites with area people of all ages. The doll figures or “wee friends,” each machine washable, are created entirely by Mrs. Fran Strasburg of Silver Creek. It all started six years ago when she couldn’t find a soft doll for her youngest daughter as everything was hard plastic. Demand for the dolls is high and most of her sales are at area craft shows.

Fifty years ago — 1970

The Division of Kaiser Aerospace & Electronics Corp. of Phoenix, Ariz., one of the leaders in the cable television business, has been selected to install a cable television system in Dunkirk, according to Mayor F. Neil Chaffie
