Thirty years ago — 1990

Christina Vergara, a singer/dancer currently performing in the Middle East with the Hollywood Stars, is out of Kuwait and when last heard from had arrived in Casablanca. The wife of Timm Andrews of San Pedro, Calif., formerly of Dunkirk, now a first mate on the cruise ship Spirit of Los Angeles, wrote her mother-in-law, Mary Andrews of Dunkirk, a letter that encompassed several days of travel and activities, including her arrival in Kuwait and quick escape from the area just prior to its invasion by Iraqi troops on Aug. 2.

Forty years ago — 1980

Worried pet owners are creating a nationwide shortage of the vaccine for parvovirus, a deadly and fast-acting new dog disease creeping across the country from state to state. Three million doses are currently on back order. The virus, believed to be a mutated form of cat distemper, was first identified in the U.S. two years ago. It can wipe out entire litters and usually does, but can infect any dog of any age. Death can come in 24 to 36 hours.

Fifty years ago — 1970

The Village Shop has opened at 16 West Main St., Fredonia after being located in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area several years ago. The store is part of a chain of women’s clothing stores.
