Thirty years ago — 1990

The grape harvest in Chautauqua County — and for most of western New York — is expected to be smaller this year than other years, according to regional grape specialist James Kamas. The crop could be the smallest since the 1970s, down about 2,000 tons from 1989 and an estimated 7,000 tons from 1988.

Forty years ago — 1980

Calendar Girl for the month of October is Julie K. Nelson, daughter of Jeanne H. Nelson of 33 Liberty St., Fredonia. A Fredonia High School senior, Julie has been active in mixed chorus, school orchestra and high school musicals. She is also a member of the yearbook staff and a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, she plans to major in special/elementary education.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Thomas M. Huber has returned to his home on East Main Street, Fredonia after spending four days in Cleveland, where he attended the Phi Gamma Delta 122nd Ekklesia. He represented the Kent State University chapter, which he is currently serving as treasurer.
