Thirty years ago — 1990

A young Chautauqua County mother recently became the first person to receive Gov. Mario Cuomo’s new Decade of the Child award — an honor established to recognize young people who have successfully overcome large obstacles in their lives. Tylah Marie Aponte, a 20-yearold city of Dunkirk resident, went from a high school dropout on welfare with a baby to support, to earning her GED, taking college courses and landing a job — all over the course of two years.

Forty years ago — 1980

Keith Moody, former return specialist for the Buffalo Bills, is touring Chautauqua County this week presenting assemblies in several local schools, Mr. Moody, who is sponsored by the New York State Migrant Tutorial Program, is presently the fulltime coordinator of the “Goals for Youth” program which involves NFL players from the Giants, Jets and Bills working with migrant youth during the off-season.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Wayne Campaign, a senior at Forestville Central School, is the Student of the Week. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Campaign, Bradigan Road, Forestville.
