Thirty years ago — 1990

Gowanda Psychiatric Center employees are rallying forces and organizing strategies in an effort to keep the state facility in operation. GPC, as it is now, is going to disappear, they were told. An aggressive unified campaign was urged, one which will inform the public and government officials at the highest level that there is a crucial need to maintain state-operated services for the mentally ill.

Forty years ago — 1980

A front-page OBSERVER photo features tandem bicycling, a favorite pastime of Paul and Bea Taddio of Woodrow Avenue, Dunkirk. Weather permitting, the couple bike almost daily over Dunkirk-Fredonia streets for exercise and relaxation.

Fifty years ago — 1970

A new feature on Friday and Saturday nights at the Schnitzelbank Restaurant, Route 39, between Forestville and Fredonia, is music by “The Modern Men.”
