Thirty years ago — 1990

Located in the former Neighborhood Card Shop and Town and Country store building at 323 Central Ave., Bill’s Bikes and Sports offers 3,500 square feet of showroom in promoting its theme of “familyfun and fitness.” Owned and operated by Bill and Jane Ploetz of Dunkirk, the store is the second of its kind in the local area. The couple own a similar store in the Gowanda area.

Forty years ago — 1980

After 55 years as a member of the Silver Creek Fire Department, the last 25 of those years spent as training instructor for the department, Wilford O. Velzy has informed the village board he is retiring. As training instructor for the department, Mr. Velzy had the job of taking raw recruits and turning them into capable firefighters. Silver Creek Mayor Ted Welch remarked that “Mr. Velzy has become an institution here in Silver Creek and we’ll be hard pressed to find another instructor with his dedication.”

Fifty years ago — 1970

“Cedarside” is the name selected for the recently-constructed troop cabin at Girl Scout Camp Timbercrest near Randolph.
