Thirty years ago — 1990
Sale of the Chautauqua County solid waste disposal system today became a dead duck, at least for the immediate future, as majority Republicans in the county legislature conceded they do not have the votes to get the measure approved. County Executive Andrew Goodell immediately blamed solid Democratic opposition to the sale for the GOP’s opposition not to support his plan “at this time” and predicted it will mean substantially higher real estate taxes, a crippling of the county’s industrial development efforts and neglect of highways and bridges.
Forty years ago — 1980
A total of 148 recordings of music by Canadian composers or performed by Canadian musicians, are now in the Reed Library at Fredonia State University College as a gift from the Canadian government. The recordings are the latest installment in a continuing exchanged between the Canadian Consulate and Fredonia State.

Frank J. Valvo of Dunkirk, agency manager in charge of the Dunkirk detached office of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company’s Jamestown district office, has been awarded the coveted chartered life underwriter designation.
