Thirty years ago — 1990

Student of the Week is Sydney John Jr., 18, of Irving. The son of Irene Warrior and Sydney John Sr., he is a student at the Cassadaga Job Corps Center. Sydney entered Job Corps in May and began GED classes and training in carpentry offered by Homebuilders Institute. He will complete his training next spring and will pursue employment and advanced education at Erie Community College.

Forty years ago — 1980

Former Cassadaga resident Randy David Briggs was recently elected to the board of representatives of the Student Bar Association at the University of Akron School of Law where he is in his first year of legal studies. A 1980 magna cum laude graduate of SUNY Fredonia where he earned a BA in political science, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Martin of Frisbee Road, Cassadaga and the husband of the former Kim Tolman of Sinclairville.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Mrs. Esther Pelton, a fourth-grade teacher at the Wheelock School in Fredonia, has announced her retirement, effective Jan. 1. She resides at 237 Chestnut St., Fredonia with her husband, Irving.
