Thirty years ago — 1990

Adam Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cole of Silver Creek, recently tied for thirdplace honors in the annual Gordon Ogden Biology Competition at Alfred University. Adam is a student at Silver Creek Central School.

Todd Burek of Forestville has been awarded a Winifred E. DiVita Scholarship at Canisius College for the 1990-91 academic year. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Burek, Todd is a junior management major.

Forty years ago — 1980

The new Kiwanis Club of Cassadaga Valley was officially organized recently at a dinner meeting held at Gordon’s White Horse Inn in Cassadaga, with about 20 local businesses and professional men in attendance. Samuel S. Danton, superintendent of the Cassadaga Valley School District, was named president of the club. The new club is being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Fredonia.

Fifty years ago — 1970

A feature story reminds readers that Dec. 14, 1900 was Fredonia’s saddest day. Seventy years ago on that December day, the old Normal School building burned, with the loss of seven lives — six girls and the aged but devoted janitor, Phineas J. Morris.
