Thirty years ago — 1990

More than 300 persons gathered for the formal dedication of the Silver Creek Central School District’s new swimming pool and fitness center. The opening of the pool marks the end of a major construction project, which was approved by a referendum for expenditures of more than $3,000,000. In addition, 11 new classrooms were completed in time for the beginning of school last September.

Forty years ago — 1980

The Red Wing Co. Inc. of Fredonia has been forced to put 70 employees in its peanut butter department on permanent layoff because of a small edible peanut crop which resulted from last summer’s drought in the south and southwest. Because of the drought conditions, the final crop of peanuts was only 62 percent of last year’s crop. And because of a mold condition, 13 percent of the 62 percent was not available for edible uses.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Sally Strong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strong of 53 Main St., Forestville, is the Student of the Week. She is a senior at Forestville Central School. The Campus Center at Fredonia State University College was dedicated Dec. 6.
