Thirty years ago — 1990

The resignation of Principal Alona N. Forbes of the Aldrich Street School effective Jan. 7, 1991 was accepted by the Gowanda School Board. Mrs. Forbes has accepted an administrative post with the Dunkirk school system.

Forty years ago — 1980

Priscilla VanderWeel’s third-grade reading class at Brocton Central School has written to the U.S. Postal Service in Washington, D.C., recommending that a commemorative stamp be issued honoring Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the “Little House” books. A massive appeal from the U.S. Commemorative Stamp Project Committee urged readers of the Wilder series to write for passage of this commemorative stamp.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Dunkirk has been given final federal approval for the construction of a small boat harbor. The Senate Public Works Committee has approved the $1,071,000 project.
