Thirty years ago — 1991

A front page OBSERVER photo titled “Big catch for little guy” shows 6-year-old Zachary Kaus of Dunkirk holding the 12- pound steelhead trout he pulled in while fishing on the city pier with his dad. Little sister Amy, age 5, helps her brother hold the big fish while their dad, Gary, holds up another catch of the day.

Forty years ago — 1981

Although they aren’t old oak trees, the trees in the center mall in the village of Forestville are adorned with yellow ribbons to welcome home the former American hostages held 444 days in Iran. Marylou Goldberg, manager of a Forestville restaurant, decorated the trees and was praised for her work by Mayor Walter Meadows.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Edward J. Furlan has been named plant manager of Fredonia Food Specialties Division of W.R. Grace and Co., 180 East Main St., Fredonia. Mr. Furlan has been with various food companies for more than 30 years.
