Thirty years ago — 1991

The state’s plan to build a $2.8-million day care center for the developmentally disabled on the campus of the Chautauqua County Home in the west Town of Dunkirk appeared dead this morning. Instead, the center probably will be built on a five-acre site along Williams Street in the east Town of Dunkirk.

Forty years ago — 1981

James Dempsey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dempsey, 275 Lincoln Ave., Dunkirk was ordained a Missionary of Charity Brother at ceremonies held Jan. 11 in Los Angeles. This is the order founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta to serve the poorest of the poor in the world. Brother Dempsey is headed to a three-year assignment in Sao Paolo, Brazil where he will open a new mission.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Mrs. Beatrice Mahaney, principal of School 5 in Dunkirk, was awarded a PTA Life Membership. The presentation was made to the long-time educator during a recent School 5 PTA meeting
