Thirty years ago — 1991

Fredonia State University College alumna Mary McDonnell, who co-stars with Kevin Costner in the epic western, “Dances With Wolves,” has been nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress. She portrays a white woman raised by Lakota Sioux Indians in the film. Ms. McDonnell graduated from Fredonia in 1974.

Forty years ago — 1981

A new reading incentive program has been instituted for students in kindergarten through sixth grade at Forestville Central School. Known as “Parents as Reading Partners,” the program encourages parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes a day. Reading time is recorded on a monthly contract which is returned to the school at the end of the month.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Ames discount supermarket, Bennett Road, Dunkirk is advertising large eggs for 39 cents a dozen; pork roast, 59 cents a pound; Sugardale hot dogs, 59 cents a pound; and ground chuck, 70 cents a pound.
